In 1987, when Chang Yi decided to name his grassroots glass art workshop “Liuligongfang”, neither he nor Loretta Hui-shan Yang over thought it. “Liuli” was the term for glass that first appeared in the Shang Dynasty and “gongfang” simply means workshop. They felt the combination evocative and meaningful.
Liuligongfang chose to use pate-de-verre, an outwardly straightforward technique. Three and a half years and over US$2,000,000 later, the only yield was kiln after kiln of broken glass. With no profit and no prospects, they were at a complete loss.
